Yoga in Rishikesh India
Rishikesh, which lies in the foothills of the Garhwal region is the gateway to the four dhams of Uttarakhand — Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri. The river Ganges flows through the town and then descends to the plains at Haridwar. Rishikesh is considered a sacred place and it is believed that meditation at this place leads to attainment of salvation. This is a place of many temples. Most of them lie along the river side where ashrams of Sadhus and Sages are widely spread.
Ayur Yoga School is situated in the laps of lower Himalayas, and is surrounded by scenic beauty of the hills on three sides with Holy Ganga flowing through it. Rishikesh is 24 Kms from Haridwar, an important centre for pilgrims closely associated with the Ramayana. There are many Yoga Ashrams and Yoga institutes here. Rishikesh is often called the `Yoga Capital of the World’ because of its tranquility and mythological importance.
In the 1960’s, the place gained instant fame as the Yoga site when the popular musical band “The Beatles” came to stay with their guru, the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. It is an excellent place to meditate and study yoga.
The nearest airport is Jolly Grant which is 18km. from Rishikesh on way to Dehradun. At present chartered planes operate.
Rishikesh is connected by rail with Haridwar, Delhi, Bombay, Howrah, Lucknow and Agra.
Rishikesh is connected by road with most places of North India.
